Apparently the SES closed the lines because the RACV lines were jammed and many people were ringing to report traffic jams and car breakdowns on main roads. Plus, over 1000 calls were logged at OOO with morons asking when the wind was going to stop and "was rain expected?".
Sigh.
(sorry, my CommentLuv seems to have gone with the wind)

Your fellow blogger only just got on to the SES (State Emergency Services) After ringing the ABC about why they were not telling us why, when we rang the SES, we kept getting transferred to Ballarat City Council which was closed for the day, I then heard on the news that the SES had blocked lines and just to wait. So 8 hours later! They could come at 3.30 am, no-one knows.
Still we didn't lose power.
I went down the street for something and a huge tree was uprooted, like the one in your photo, in Fairfield. The road was closed and the power to all the shops was out.
Apparently the SES has had 1200 calls.
One of the worst effected areas for wind problems was my suburb, Northcote.
