Bus Stop from Hell

Have you ever sat fuming in a bus stop? I have. I check my watch. I read the timetable on the wall. I check my watch again. I get up to look down the road with the concentration usually practiced by a sailor in a crows nest looking for sight of land.

But residents of a nursing home in Dusseldorf have a bus stop from Hell. Not one single bus stops there! It’s a farce, a trick to get the poor old codgers plonked down in the seat awaiting a non-existent bus.

Apparently they’re happy, after waiting some time, to be coaxed back inside for a nice cup of tea. It would take more than a cup of tea to calm me down.

Staff say that the elderly Errants wait for a trip home at the bus stop, only to forget why they were there in the first place. Poor old buggers, as if life isn’t hard enough without waiting interminably for a bus.

Keep Bilbo on the Beach

Britain’s only lifeguard dog may be allowed to return to his beach after a public outcry in the wake of his sacking.

Hopefully Bilbo the lifeguard will be reinstated after a public campaign protesting his sacking last month from duties on a Cornwall beach.

Bilbo was sacked for trivial details such as the law which prohibits dogs from coming onto the beach and for his failure to pass the kiss of life test.

The sacking of the gallant guard, a 14-stone, 7 year old Newfoundland, sparked petitions and campaigns all over England to see Bilbo return to work.

Do you find this story of petty officialdom frightening? Even more frightening is the crowd of Bilbo supporters, as seen in the 2000+ Facebook group ‘Keep Bilbo on the beach’.

Canned Fish Patties

A recipe today. Tuna patties or, as I had in my childhood, salmon patties. All from the can of course. We ate ours on Fridays, I preferred them to smoked cod and this is the absolute genuine recipe of my Mum’s from the 1940s almost blow for blow. Almost, but not quite. Mum didn’t have access to instant mashed potato in packets.

Canned salmon was cheap this morning so that’s what I’m making, but tuna patties are excellent too. I’m not going to muck around with getting measurements translated, and I’m going to leave it to your doubtless common sense to figure how much of which ingredients go where. I’m in a hurry. My fish patties are in the oven. (more…)
