Calm Down. Breathe. Facebook Hears You

What’s an old ( insert word of your choice) like myself doing on Facebook, you say? Simple. I enjoy it.

I will take this opportunity to apologise for throwing that sheep at you. Sorry, but when you sent all those petunias, eggs and promises of knighthood it almost drove me to drink.

Those bloody awful apps would force me to sign up! I would spend an hour sorting referrals, invites, updates and martinis on the lookout for some actual communication.

But relief is at hand. In the new Facebook, apps will no longer be allowed to force users to invite friends for anything. Good show.

New Facebook

The new Facebook is a little beauty. It’s a better looking layout and, once I put on my glasses and paid attention, I imagined what a great blog theme it would be.

I see that the right column is being used for ads, plural. There are two there now, not one. But does anyone look in the right column anymore? Isn’t that a blind spot? I’ll have to watch the stats for my own little ad for any significant difference.

The tab system is a definite improvement.

From the Facebook Blog

The Wall now surfaces the most recent and relevant information—in the form of posts of stories—about you. We believe that having a constant stream of information, or “feed” is the most effective way to learn about and keep up with friends. Just as News Feed helps you know what is happening in your social circle, you can use the Wall as a way to give your friends the full story of what’s happening with you.

A big piece of the Wall is the Publisher, which enables you to publish content—photos, notes, your status, and so on—directly to your Wall.

The new tabbed profile should help a lot in this respect, breaking your information into tabs by type. The Wall tab displays most recent and relevant information both about you and by you. The Info tab shows information about you that doesn’t change frequently. The Photos tab shows photos of you as well as your albums. The Boxes tab features all of your existing application boxes. You’re also able to add tabs for your favorite applications.

Hop on over and have a look.

Can you spare a dime for an old dame?
